Bully Pulpit, yes; but a Bully Selectman?

Publius: ARTICLE SUBMISSION

Heard in the Town Hall.

It appears that when the cameras are turned off, our new chairman of the board of selectmen is not quite so charming, in fact, he is downright a bully!

Earlier this week our Town Clerk, an elected official herself, invited a resident back to her desk to look up some information. This resident just happened to be Mr. Grant, eveidently Mr. Sapia's outright hate for Mr. Grant superceded whatever common sense he has, because after approaching and asking what was going on, and after Mr. Grant left the town hall, Mr. Sapia proceeded to scream insanely at our beloved town clerk. He told her that "from now on, no one would come behind the counter!" She could come up to the counter to serve the residents. This screaming and demeaning behavior would be bullying if it were directed at any resident, but an elected town official over whom THE SELECTMEN HAVE NO AUTHORITY TO SET POLICY FOR!, and a woman at that! Not very gentlmanly Jack! In fact your behavior is dispicable!

You can not treat anyone like that let alone someone who has forgotten more about town government than you will ever learn, Jack, that's if you were even interested in learning your job, which evidently you are not. What made this even worse is that it took place in front of the town clerk's staf, within earshot of the rest of the town hall employees, and in fornt of two residents who were in the town hall for whatever reason. This was a public humiliation and therefore the apology should be public as well.

Mrs. Jette is a class act, always ready to help any resident, even when she is at home. She is dedicated, conscientous, and hard working, and your conduct, while becoming a habit for you, is still dispicable! You owe the town clerk an apology! And it should be a public one at that! While you are at it you can publicly apologize to Mr. Sullivan for your swearing at him a couple of months ago. This has to stop! You do not earn respect by treating others so shabbily.

Remember, Jack, behavior like this in the private sector would get you fired!

It is sickening that you have to be told to apologize but it falls to this blog to do so.

Apologize to the Town Clerk, Publicly, Jack!

How can you effectively represent the town when you obviously harbor such abject hate for some of it's residents, Jack?

Just conider the possibility that Mr. Sapia had a good teacher. He spent two years listening to the Chief scream, yell, holler, threaten and demean people....in public, and on live TV. Mr. Sapia merely watched his mentor and learned well.

Lt. Baldwin is learning well, too. Remember his yelling at Deliberative Session?

Phil should be proud.

Just like the story last month about him swearing at selectman Sullivan, This is uncalled for. Bad form.

It is a Cardinal rule of management "praise in public, chastise in private" although in this case he shouldn'e have been chastising because Linda doesn't work for him. Things like this and the sullivan swearing incident shouldn't be happening, especially not in Atkinson.

"Behind the counter" is where the Town Clerk keeps the town's records
all of which are public information! Over the years, she has allowed those who wish to do research behind the counter. It's a whole lot easier (and more convenient for both) than having Linda select the information they're looking for and taking it up to them. Moreover, there's no area at the front of the room which would allow a citizen space to read and write. Most importantly, that information is or should be available to EVERYONE.
If Mr. Sapia chooses to ban it, get a lawyer and sue, because he's dead wrong.

This is just another example of how JACK DOSENT KNOW THE ENTIRE TOWN HATES HIM!!!!!! nobody likes him, he should just retire now! he constantly starts fights with the library over the things he has NO AUTHORITY OVER.. ever notice that Sullivan went to all the selectmen trainings, EVERY SINGLE ONE -- howmay has Jack been to? Maybe 1?! he's "too good" for that. Just shows how arrogant he is, unreal, grow up Jack, learn to do YOUR job. Linda J. has been doing her Job, longer than you've lived in town.. Just pathetic Jack, really lost everything for you on that one, VOTE NO FOR JACK

Why is it in Atkinson that public discourse no longer allows for a difference of opinion? If your opinion differs from the selectmen or the chief, then you are a troublemaker, you have a personal vendetta, you are simpy out to destroy a dedicated public servant; when in reality they are out to destroy you by any means at ther disposal, and if you get tired of it, you must suck it up and go to court to be vindicated, and even then the propaganda sticks and the fact that you won, is lost in the din.

Sounds like Sapia should run for the democrat presidential nomination. He their kind of temperament.

Is this the same guy who didn't like the tone of Carol Grant's voice, when she was asking questions in a selectmen's meeting? He is a hypocrit AND a bully! Linda should never have to put up with that kind of treatment, especially not from him.

Mr. Acciard: Unfortunately, the political dictators in town are very good at suppressing factual information and spinning the truth. These "abusers" are good at playing on people's fears and bullying taxpayers and political opponents into submission/silence.

We have to accept this reality. They ARE good at it. They have been underestimated too long. Too many "Davids" tried to slay Goliath and the sad part is that Goliath has quite a long winning streak with a slew of bodies left behind.

My opinion is this: The reason they failed against Goliath was not for a lack of individual effort. It was because the individuals tried to do it themselves (or at least too much was tried by too few). There was not enough support by an organized group of taxpayers to step up and support a rebellion against the monarchy.

Publius and Ulysses have enabled a first step: The sharing of information that has been suppressed for too long. I am quite amazed at how much I learned in such a short time. And not just reading others opinions but being able to look up things like articles and RSAs on line to form my own opinions - and truly, the are my own and I feel confident they are based on facts. My eyes have been opened.

If the taxpayers have had enough, then they will work together in a united front to affect change. If not, nothing will change.

I would ask Publius to stop allowing the publishing of comments like anon March 30, 2:21:

"Sounds like Sapia should run for the democrat presidential nomination. He their kind of temperament."

It does not add to the conversation and should not be allowed. Clearly Mr. Sapia should not be allowed to run for any political position, regardless of political party.

These types of comments will continue to divide people. Don't take the bait.

Is not this guy a town employee that was barred from holding elected office? Did not his attempt to have that ordinance overturned fail?

Jack...Is there a side of the story you wish to add..or is this the standard behavor we are going to see?

This kind of behavior has been going on for years !!!
kudos to all who are against it !!
I for one have witnessed all of this behavior - especially the bullying and vindictiveness !!!
One tactic is to have police cruisers or the dare truck cruise SLOWLY by residents houses - as an imtimidation tactic. This is why I sign this anonymously !!!

ATKINSON's Vietnam HONOR ROLL as VOTED and PASSED by 2005 Town Meeting and re-approved at Special Town Meeting Sept. 12

EDITORIAL-

A voice of compassion, an example of fairness and reasonable government.

One who believes in the strength and comfort you, your children and your family can draw from good government leadership.

A person who knows Atkinson is our home -- our most important possession that must be preserved and protected through fair taxes and sound community planning and where our children must be safe to grow to become a new generation of leaders.

One who knows that the citizens of Atkinson are all neighbors with her leadership to be dedicated and responsive to all.

One who believes that when those from Atkinson have served our nation and honors are deserved, those honors must be given.

In Valerie Tobin, we now have a leader we know we can entrust with these responsibilities because they are part of her character.

It is our honor to endorse Valerie for election to Atkinson’s Board of Selectmen.

Just a note for those who wish to count the deer.

In January 08 this blog had 16,000 hits and 1,500 unique visitors (for the month).

In 2007 this blog had over 100,000 hits and 5,750 unique visitors (for the year).

EDITORIAL-

"I offer nothing more than simple facts, plain arguments, and common sense . . ." [TP, 1776]

We take no small measure of umbrage at such a hostile official act against this BLOG’s patron. Therefore, a timely Editorial comment is both appropriate and necessary.

Discussion of Atkinson’s financial direction, from any viewpoint, is fundamental and encouraged and we will always attempt to limit and correct errors.

However, Righteous indignation towards purported error of such inconsequential nature is not appropriate.

The ENTIRE car deal is problematic. If it was caused by poor judgement, improper exercise of authority, neglect or mistake or even specious reasoning, this will never trump the facts that the entire questionable transaction started and ended within a very small circle of confidants.

We find the entire circumstances surrounding the disposition of the police Cruiser highly irregular at the least and the "explanations" somewhat trifling and exhaustive of our intellect.

Mr. Consentino: It’s time to go. Being Chief of Atkinson’s Police Department is NOT a birthright. That is a fabled legend of yesteryear.

Historically in Atkinson, police chief appointments were made "under the hand of the selectmen" for terms of one year at a time, as was also the case in the beginning of Mr. Consentino’s assorted and discontinuous stream of appointments to this position.

Your only remaining credential established on a claim of indispensability has faded.

So time is neigh. Plan a graceful exit, Clean out your desk, Accept the gratitude and tearful sentiments from some. We plan no editorial recriminations. It is time. Thank you for your service, We wish you a long and happy retirement. Bon Voyage.

LETTER

"To All Atkinson Residents,

I am writing to ask for your help. A member of the Atkinson Police Department needs our help. I am here to ask for your help in Corporal John Lapham's fight for his life. As you are aware, John has been diagnosed with Leukemia. He has been once again hospitalized with an infection that is threatening his life. He is one of the bravest people that I have ever met. He has never asked of anything from the residents of the town. Now is our chance to step up and help both him and his family out. As everyone is aware John has been out of work for a few months. His family has been busy helping John to get better. He needs our help, and I am hoping that this town can step up to the plate and help. From the moment that I met John, I have admired him. He does alot, but never asks for anything in return. He has helped so many people in this town. I for one am one of those people. Please help him.

There is a fund set-up in his name at TDBanknorth in Plaistow. Any amount will help John, while he is out of work. It would be great if this town could help ease a burden off his wife.

Thank You

Also if anyone would like to send a card, please address it to:
